The "Charles III Surrender" title almost certainly refers to the formal Japanese surrender ceremony of September 2, 1945, held aboard USS Missouri in Tokyo Bay — an event with direct significance to the Solomon Islands, where some of the Pacific War's most brutal fighting occurred, including the Guadalcanal campaign of 1942–43. The Solomons issued commemorative 50-cent pieces of this type through the Pobjoy Mint and related private minting arrangements, which have produced dozens of themed issues for the territory with limited connection to domestic circulation.
