The "Nemo" in this title refers to Captain Nemo, Jules Verne's enigmatic submariner from Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Sea (1870) and The Mysterious Island (1874). Tuvalu has issued commemorative coinage under the Australian legal tender framework since 1976, routinely licensing pop-culture and literary themes for collector issues through the Perth Mint. The .9999 fineness is notably purer than the .999 standard common to most bullion-adjacent commemoratives — a specification Perth adopted to compete directly with Royal Canadian Mint collector output.
