Part of a wave of licensed character coinage that Pacific island nations — particularly those administered through the New Zealand currency zone — have leaned on heavily since the 2010s as a revenue stream rather than a circulating necessity. The Solomon Islands has issued under similar arrangements for decades, with the actual minting subcontracted to private facilities and the issuing authority functioning largely on paper.

Mr. Monopoly, properly named Rich Uncle Pennybags, dates to the 1936 U.S. edition of the game — though the character was not formally named until much later. Silver-plated iron rather than silver proper keeps production costs negligible on novelty issues of this kind.
