| Reverse description | A detailed miniature rendition of Leonardo da Vinci's celebrated mural The Last Supper (c. 1495–1498) occupies the entire reverse field. The composition faithfully reproduces the scene of Christ seated at the centre of a long table, flanked on either side by six apostles arranged in animated groups of three, set within a recessed hall with three rear windows. The rendering is executed in polychrome color application over the gold substrate, evoking the palette and perspective of the original fresco in the refectory of Santa Maria delle Grazie, Milan. The rectangular format of the coin is particularly well suited to the panoramic horizontal composition of the source artwork. |
