The Hawker Hurricane is often overshadowed by the Spitfire in popular memory, but it destroyed more enemy aircraft during the Battle of Britain than all other British defenses combined. Rugged and easy to repair — ground crews could patch one up with canvas and dope — it bore the brunt of the Luftwaffe's bomber formations while Spitfires engaged the fighters above.
The Solomon Islands has issued commemorative transport and military series under Central Bank authority since the 1990s, licensing designs through Perth and Pobjoy minting arrangements. Gold-plated iron is the workhorse of the low-cost commemorative market.
