Guy Gibson commanded the 617 Squadron raid on the Ruhr dams in May 1943 — Operation Chastise — and was awarded the Victoria Cross the same month. He was killed in September 1944 when his de Havilland Mosquito crashed near Steenbergen, Netherlands, cause still disputed: fuel starvation, friendly fire, and aircrew inexperience on type have all been proposed.
