Churchill's connection to the Solomon Islands is direct: the Guadalcanal campaign of 1942–43, fought largely within what was then the British Solomon Islands Protectorate, was among the most strategically consequential Allied operations in the Pacific. Britain's wartime prime minister had argued strenuously against overextending in the Pacific theater, yet the islands became a six-month grinding battle that effectively halted Japanese expansion.
