The Battle of the Somme, launched on 1 July 1916, produced the single bloodiest day in British military history — 57,470 casualties before nightfall. The five-month campaign ultimately shifted fewer than eight miles of front line. Solomon Islands has issued commemorative coins under licensing arrangements since the 1990s, a common revenue mechanism for Pacific microstates with no meaningful connection to the commemorated events.
