Canadian Tire 'money' is a loyalty coupon, not legal tender, but it was printed by the Canadian Bank Note Company — the same Ottawa firm responsible for genuine Dominion of Canada notes and later Bank of Canada issues. The CBN contract lent these coupons a physical credibility that almost certainly reinforced public willingness to treat them as quasi-currency.
The 1974 series added the qualifier "at Canadian Tire store or gas bar" to head off redemption disputes as the gas bar network expanded separately from retail locations. A small administrative decision, but it distinguishes this issue from earlier printings and reflects how seriously the corporation managed the program's informal monetary rules.
