Zimbabwe's early-2000s coinage existed in a strange limbo — physically present but economically irrelevant. By 2001, inflation was accelerating sharply under the pressure of the Fast Track Land Reform Programme and the collapse of agricultural output, and the purchasing power of 50 cents was eroding faster than the coins could reach circulation. The switch to nickel plated steel from the earlier nickel composition reflects the Reserve Bank's quiet acknowledgment that the intrinsic metal value of higher-grade alloys was becoming an embarrassment.
