Obverse description The obverse features the national coat of arms of Sierra Leone at centre, depicting a shield quartered with a lion passant, mountains, and wavy lines representing the sea, supported by two lions rampant, each flanked by a palm tree, with a ribbon below bearing the national motto 'UNITY FREEDOM JUSTICE'. The large numeral '50' appears prominently above the arms in the upper field. The circular legend 'REPUBLIC OF SIERRA LEONE' runs along the upper periphery, while 'FIFTY CENTS' and the date appear along the lower periphery, all separated by raised dots. The design was engraved by Christopher Ironside and struck with a milled border.
