The 1946 French Indochina 50 Cents was struck in Paris during one of the most politically volatile moments in the colony's history — the same year the First Indochina War began, following the breakdown of negotiations between France and the Viet Minh. Copper-nickel replaced the silver alloys used in prewar issues, a direct consequence of wartime metal shortages that had gutted French monetary reserves.
Very few of these reached general circulation in the interior. The colonial monetary system was already fragmenting by the time production concluded.
