The legend REPUBLIQUE FRANCAISE arcs around the periphery, divided left and right of the central figure, with the mint year appearing in the exergue below, accompanied by the engraver's signature BARRE. The composition reflects the academic Neo-classical style characteristic of late 19th-century French colonial coinage.
