| Obverse description | Seated allegorical figure of Liberty facing left, wearing a radiate crown and classical drapery, holding an upright fasces in her right hand and resting her left hand on a rudder; a palm frond appears to the left of the figure. The legend REPUBLIQUE FRANÇAISE curves along the upper periphery, with the date 1879 displayed prominently in the lower exergue. The engraver's name BARRE appears in small letters at the base of the design, just left of center. The design, executed in the neoclassical style by Jean-Auguste Barre, is enclosed within a beaded border. |
