Andorra's gold coinage of the 1990s was issued under the authority of the Co-Princes — the Bishop of Urgell and the President of France — a feudal arrangement dating to 1278 that made Andorra one of the last surviving medieval co-principalities. These small-denomination gold pieces were never intended for circulation; they were produced for the collector market during a period when Andorra had no domestic central bank and used French francs and Spanish pesetas as de facto currency.
Isabella I's inclusion reflects Andorra's historical ties to the Crown of Castile, though her actual authority over the territory was marginal at best.
