Zarra is a small municipality in the province of Valencia, and like dozens of similarly sized Spanish towns, it issued its own fractional emergency currency during the Civil War — the central government's inability to maintain adequate coin supply in Republican-held territories forced local authorities to fill the gap with paper. These municipal emissions were typically authorized under the decree of August 1936 and were valid only within the issuing locality.
