Vinaixa is a small municipality in Les Garrigues comarca, Lleida province, Catalonia — population well under a thousand even in the 1930s. This note is one of thousands of locally issued emergency fractional pieces produced during the Spanish Civil War, when the Republic's central monetary system effectively collapsed at the retail level and individual municipalities were left to generate their own small-change substitutes. The Generalitat de Catalunya encouraged but did not fully regulate these issues, which is why the quality, format, and backing varied so dramatically from town to town.
Turró catalogues this as #2909, placing Vinaixa among the smaller, harder-to-document issuers in the series.
