Villanueva la Roja is a small municipality in the province of Salamanca, and like hundreds of Spanish towns during the Civil War, its municipal council issued fractional emergency paper — vales — to address the near-total disappearance of metallic coinage after 1936. These local emissions had no formal backing and were honored only within the issuing community, sometimes only for days before political or military circumstances rendered them void.
Documentation on this specific council's issue is sparse. Surviving examples from Salamanca-province municipalities are uncommon, as many were redeemed or destroyed quickly and production runs were small.
