Villajoyosa — a small coastal town in Alicante province — was one of hundreds of Spanish municipalities that issued emergency fractional currency during the Civil War after the Republic's metal coinage effectively vanished from circulation by mid-1936. The Consejo Municipal issues were purely local instruments, accepted within the town and worthless beyond it.
