Villajoyosa — a small coastal town in Alicante province — was one of hundreds of Spanish municipalities that issued emergency fractional currency during the Civil War after the Republic's metal coinage effectively vanished from circulation by mid-1936. The Consejo Municipal issues were purely local instruments, accepted within the town and worthless beyond it. Many were printed on whatever stock was available, which is why paper quality and ink consistency vary so sharply within a single series.

The Gari Montllor catalogue remains the definitive reference for these municipal Spanish Civil War emissions, and the -B suffix on this listing indicates a recognized variety within the type.
