Vilatorta is a small municipality in Osona, Catalonia, and this 50 céntimos note is one of the thousands of locally issued emergency fractional pieces — called moneda local or vals — that flooded Catalonia and the rest of the Republican zone after July 1936, when the hoarding of metal coins during the Civil War created an acute shortage of small change.
