Vilamajor issued emergency fractional currency in 1937 under the Republican municipal authority system that authorized Catalan town councils to produce their own small-denomination paper during the Civil War coin shortage. The Generalitat's decree effectively deputized hundreds of municipalities to fill a gap that neither Madrid nor Barcelona could solve centrally — the result was an explosion of highly localized scrip, much of it printed by small commercial shops in Barcelona fulfilling bulk orders from surrounding towns.
El Secretariat Català handled multiple such municipal commissions. Survival rates for these low-denomination wartime issues are unpredictable; many circulated hard before the Nationalist victory rendered them worthless in 1939.
