50 Céntimos Vandellòs

Vandellòs was a small agricultural municipality in the Camp de Tarragona, and like hundreds of similarly sized Spanish towns during the Civil War, it issued its own fractional emergency currency in 1937 after the Republican government's Decree of 21 June 1937 officially sanctioned local paper money to address the near-total disappearance of metallic coinage from circulation. The Republican peseta was hemorrhaging public confidence, silver and copper had been hoarded or melted, and small transactions had essentially seized up.

Imprenta Solé operated out of Tarragona and handled several of these municipal emergency emissions across the province. The official stamp was the primary anti-counterfeiting measure — thin protection, but counterfeiting a 50-céntimos note from a village of a few thousand people was hardly a profitable enterprise.
