50 Céntimos Vallfogona de Balaguer

Vallfogona de Balaguer is a small municipality in the Noguera comarca of Lleida, and like hundreds of Catalan and Spanish towns during the Civil War, its ayuntamiento issued its own fractional paper currency in 1937 to compensate for the near-total disappearance of metallic coin from circulation. The Republican government's decree authorizing local emergency issues gave these small councils a legal framework, but production quality and survival rates varied enormously — notes from minor Catalan municipalities at this denomination level are frequently found with handling damage, as they absorbed hard daily use in local commerce before the Nationalist advance rendered them worthless.
