Vall de Castellbó is a tiny municipality in the Alt Urgell comarca of the Lleida province, and this 50 céntimos piece belongs to the vast output of Catalan emergency paper money — the *moneda de paper* — produced by local councils during the Spanish Civil War after metallic coin effectively vanished from circulation. Thousands of municipalities issued their own notes under Republican decree, and the smallest issued the smallest denominations on whatever card stock was at hand. Turró catalogued over 3,600 distinct emissions; this one sits near the upper end of that numbering.
