Valdeltormo is a village in the Matarraña comarca of Aragon, with a population that barely reached 600 during the 1930s. Like dozens of Aragonese municipalities during the Civil War, its local council issued fractional emergency scrip in 1937 when Republican-zone coin shortages made small-denomination transactions nearly impossible — copper and silver had been hoarded, melted, or simply vanished from circulation.
The stamp served as the primary authentication against forgery, a low-tech but locally effective measure. Notes of this type were only valid within the issuing municipality, which limited counterfeiting incentive considerably.
