Ulldecona is a small municipality in the Montsià comarca of southern Catalonia, and this note is one of hundreds of hyperlocal emergency issues produced by Catalan and Valencian towns during the Spanish Civil War when the Republican government's monetary supply collapsed at the municipal level. The Consell Municipal took over day-to-day economic functions, and local print shops — in this case Imprenta Montsià, operating within the town itself — became de facto currency producers.
Notes of this type rarely traveled far. Redemption was tied to the issuing municipality, so circulation was effectively parish-wide.
