Úbeda's Republican municipal emergency scrip from 1937 belongs to a vast category of locally issued Spanish Civil War paper — the breakdown of coin supply after 1936 forced hundreds of ayuntamientos across the Republican zone to print their own fractional currency. Most of these issues had extremely short lives; they were valid only within the issuing municipality and became worthless almost immediately once the Nationalist advance consolidated the region. Úbeda fell to Franco's forces in early 1939.

Survival rates for Andalusian municipal scrip are uneven, and many Úbeda pieces were never redeemed. The Gari Montaner catalog remains the essential reference for this series.
