Obverse description The obverse displays the Peruvian national arms at centre: a quartered shield bearing a vicuña passant to the left in the upper-left canton, a cinchona tree in the upper-right canton, and a cornucopia issuing coins in the lower portion. The shield is surmounted by a civic wreath and flanked on either side by a palm branch and an olive branch tied at the base with a ribbon. The circular legend REPUBLICA PERUANA reads around the upper field, with LIMA · 9 DEC. · FINO continuing to the right, and the assayer initials and date 1859 appearing at the base below the branches.
