Totana is a small municipality in Murcia, and like hundreds of Spanish towns during the Civil War, it printed its own fractional currency in 1937 when Republican-zone coinage effectively vanished from circulation. The Nationalist blockade and wartime hoarding drained small change so completely that local councils had no practical alternative. These municipal emissions were technically illegal under central Republican banking law but were tolerated out of necessity.
The Gari Montllor catalog — the authoritative reference for Spanish Civil War local issues — documents this 50 céntimos as type F, implying multiple distinct variants exist for Totana alone.
