Torrelles de Foix is a small municipality in the Alt Penedès comarca of Catalonia, and like hundreds of similarly sized towns it issued its own emergency fractional currency during the Spanish Civil War — the result of a catastrophic small-coin shortage that began in 1936 when metal coinage vanished from circulation almost immediately after the July uprising. These locally printed pieces, known collectively as paper moneda, were produced by municipal governments acting without any formal monetary authority beyond practical necessity.
The Turró catalogue remains the standard reference for this material. Torrelles de Foix issues are among the scarcer rural Catalan entries.
