Tivissa was a small municipality in the Ribera d'Ebre comarca of Tarragona, and like hundreds of Catalan and Spanish Republican towns during the Civil War, it issued its own emergency fractional currency when coinage vanished from circulation entirely — hoarded, melted, or simply gone. These local issues, collectively catalogued under Spain's guerra civil municipal series, filled the gap left by a central government unable to supply small change to the provinces.

Turró's catalogue documents over 2,500 such emissions. That Tivissa's 50 céntimos sits at #2495 places it deep in that count — a minor issue from a town of a few thousand inhabitants, printed on whatever card stock was locally available.
