Solsona is a small cathedral city in Lleida province, and like hundreds of Catalan municipalities during the Civil War, its ayuntamiento issued fractional emergency currency in 1937 to compensate for the catastrophic shortage of Republican coinage — silver and copper having largely disappeared from circulation through hoarding and requisition. These local issues, known collectively as moneda municipal de necessitat, were authorized under Generalitat decree and varied wildly in quality and design ambition from one town to the next.
The printer, Imprenta Litografia Sabadell y Cia., produced municipal emergency notes for multiple Catalan localities during this period, which occasionally creates attribution headaches for notes where the issuing stamp is unclear.
