Opmerkingen

One of thousands of small-denomination emergency notes — billetes de necesidad — issued by Catalan municipalities during the Civil War after Republican authorities failed to maintain adequate small change in circulation. The silver and copper coinage that should have filled this gap had been hoarded almost entirely out of existence by early 1937, forcing town councils across Catalonia to improvise their own paper currency, typically valid only within their own municipal boundaries.

Seix i Barral was primarily a book publisher, not a security printer. Their involvement here reflects how thoroughly normal commercial operations had been reorganized under wartime collectivization in Barcelona.
