50 Céntimos Sarral

Sarral is a small wine-producing municipality in the Conca de Barberà comarca of Catalonia, and like hundreds of other Spanish towns in 1937, it issued its own fractional paper currency after the Civil War disrupted the supply of small-denomination coinage. The Republican government's inability to maintain adequate coin circulation — partly due to hoarding, partly due to wartime metal demands — forced municipal councils and local collectives across the loyalist zone to fill the gap themselves, often with whatever printing resources existed nearby.

The Imprenta Solé in Tarragona handled several of these emergency emissions for smaller surrounding municipalities. An official stamp substitutes for more sophisticated security, which was entirely typical of the lower-denomination village issues in this series.
