Sanahuja is a small municipality in the comarca of Segarra, Lleida. During the Spanish Civil War, the Republican zone experienced a near-total collapse of small-denomination coinage — metal had been redirected toward the war effort, and the central government was too overwhelmed to fill the gap. Hundreds of Catalan municipalities responded by issuing their own emergency paper or cardboard fractional currency under a 1937 decree that gave local councils a legal framework, however thin, to do so.
Turró catalogues these municipal emissions exhaustively, and Sanahuja's issue is among the more obscure entries — a village-level solution to a very immediate problem. The official stamp served as the primary authentication device, since sophisticated printing infrastructure simply wasn't available at this scale.
