Sabadell, an industrial city north of Barcelona, was a stronghold of anarcho-syndicalist organization during the Civil War, and by 1937 the collapse of the Republican monetary supply chain had forced dozens of Catalan municipalities to print their own fractional currency. This note is one of those emergency emissions — locally conceived, locally printed, and valid only within the issuing municipality's jurisdiction.
Joan Sallent was Sabadell's own commercial press, which handled a significant portion of the city's wartime currency output. The Francoist victory in 1939 rendered all such municipal issues worthless overnight, and most were discarded or destroyed rather than redeemed.
