Opmerkingen

Riudarenes is a small municipality in the Selva comarca of Girona, and like hundreds of Catalan towns during the Civil War, it issued its own fractional paper currency when Republican-zone coin effectively vanished from circulation — hoarded, melted, or simply not minted in sufficient quantities to meet daily transactional needs. These local emergency issues, known collectively as paper moneda, were authorized under a 1936 Generalitat decree that gave municipalities the legal cover to paper over the coin shortage.

Turró catalogues over two thousand such issues. The sheer volume makes individual municipal notes easy to overlook, but Riudarenes examples are genuinely scarce — the town's population at the time was under a thousand, and print runs for villages of this size were correspondingly small.
