Riells del Fai is a small village in the Vallès Oriental comarca, and like hundreds of Catalan municipalities during the Civil War, it was forced to issue its own fractional currency after the Republican government's coin supply collapsed in 1936–37. Hoarding of silver and copper coins had essentially stripped small denominations from daily commerce, and local councils stepped in to fill the gap.

Gràfiques Unificades was a Granollers printing house operating under collective management following the anarcho-syndicalist takeover of much of Catalan industry in July 1936 — the "Unificades" in the name reflects that reorganization directly.
