One of hundreds of municipal emergency issues produced across Republican-held Catalonia during the Civil War, when the collapse of small-denomination coinage in circulation forced local councils to print their own scrip. Reus, an industrial town in the Camp de Tarragona, had sufficient local printing capacity to produce its own series rather than rely on shared regional issues — Imprenta De Ferrando was a local commercial press, pressed into this particular service by necessity rather than specialization in security printing.
Turró catalogs an enormous number of these Catalan local issues, and the 50 céntimos from Reus is among the more common survivors, though most circulated hard and briefly before the Nationalist advance rendered them worthless.
