Queralbs is a small mountain village in the Ripollès comarca of Catalonia, perched near the Núria valley at roughly 1,100 metres. During the Civil War, the Republican government's decree allowing municipalities to issue emergency fractional currency — the *bitllets de necessitat* — produced thousands of hyper-local notes, many from villages so small that surviving examples number in the single digits today. Queralbs had a population well under five hundred at the time.
The Cooperativa d'Arts Gràfiques in nearby Ripoll printed for several Ripollès municipalities during this period, giving notes from the region a recognizable production quality relative to cruder self-printed issues elsewhere in Catalonia.
