Puigvert — now Puigvert de Lleida — was one of hundreds of Catalan municipalities that issued their own emergency fractional currency during the Civil War, when coin shortages stripped small transactions of any practical means of exchange. The Republican government's inability to maintain a functioning coin supply at the local level forced town councils across Catalonia to fill the gap themselves, often contracting with whatever printer was nearby and available.
Arts Gràfiques Ilerda operated out of Lleida, less than fifteen kilometres away. Their imprint appears on a number of these municipal issues from the surrounding comarca, which gives this note a regional coherence that many comparable pieces from more isolated villages lack.
