50 Céntimos Prades

Prades is a small hill town in the Conca de Barberà comarca of Catalonia, and like hundreds of other Spanish municipalities it resorted to issuing its own fractional paper currency during the Civil War after metallic coinage essentially vanished from circulation in Republican-held territory. The Generalitat de Catalunya authorized this wave of local emergency scrip — without it, daily commerce in small transactions would have ground to a halt.

Sugrañes in Tarragona handled a significant volume of these municipal issues across the province, which means quality and consistency vary considerably between commissions. Prades, with a population barely exceeding a thousand, would have ordered a modest print run.
