Pinell de Brai is a small municipality in the Terra Alta comarca of Tarragona, and like hundreds of Catalan and Spanish towns during the Civil War, it issued its own fractional emergency currency when Republican-zone coinage all but vanished from circulation after 1936. The Consell Municipal turned to Josep Bassa's print shop in nearby Mora d'Ebre — a practical choice of proximity rather than any specialized security printing capacity. The official stamp was the primary safeguard against forgery, a common expedient when proper intaglio or letterpress security printing was simply unavailable to local authorities.
Turró catalogues this as reference 1834, placing it firmly within the vast ecosystem of Catalan local war issues, many of which were redeemed, destroyed, or rendered worthless within months of issue.
