Pinell de Brai is a small wine-producing municipality in the Terra Alta comarca of Tarragona, and like hundreds of Catalan and Spanish towns during the Civil War, it issued its own fractional currency in 1937 when Republican-zone coin shortages became acute. The Generalitat de Catalunya had authorized local emergency emissions, and Josep Bassa's print shop in nearby Mora d'Ebre — roughly 10 kilometers away — produced notes for several surrounding municipalities in this period, making it one of the more identifiable regional printers in the Turró corpus.
Thick card stock was a deliberate choice at this scale of production, intended to extend circulation life for notes that would pass through the same few hundred hands repeatedly.
