Pau de Sert is a tiny municipality in Alt Empordà, Catalonia, and this 50 céntimos note is among the smallest-issuing authorities to produce emergency paper money during the Spanish Civil War. The Republican government's decree of May 1937 officially authorizing local *moneda fraccionaria* came too late to organize centralized production, so hundreds of Catalan municipalities printed their own — on whatever card stock was available locally, with whatever rudimentary means they had.
Turró catalogs this issue as #1792, placing it deep in a sequence of thousands of Spanish Civil War local issues. The thick card substrate was a practical choice: it resisted wear better than thin paper when handling volumes were low and replacement impossible.
