Pallejà is a small municipality on the Llobregat river south of Barcelona, and like hundreds of Catalan towns during the Civil War, it issued its own fractional emergency currency after the Republican government's decree of late 1936 effectively authorized local bodies to plug the catastrophic shortage of small change caused by coin hoarding and metal requisitioning. The C.A.M. printer in Barcelona handled enormous volumes of these municipal issues simultaneously, which is why the production quality across dozens of towns looks nearly identical — same typefaces, same layout conventions, same thin paper stock.

Turró catalogues over 2,000 distinct Catalan wartime municipal issues, and Pallejà's 50 Céntimos is among the more obscure entries in that corpus.
