Palamós is a small coastal municipality in the province of Girona, and like hundreds of other Catalan towns during the Civil War, its ajuntament issued its own emergency fractional currency in 1937 when Republican-zone coinage effectively vanished from circulation — hoarded, melted, or simply absent. These locally issued notes, known collectively as moneda local or paper moneda, were a practical municipal response rather than any coordinated monetary policy.

Turró's catalog documents over two thousand such emissions from across Catalonia alone. The sheer volume means individual pieces from minor municipalities like Palamós attract specialist collectors rather than broad demand, and survival rates vary wildly depending on how aggressively the issuing town recalled and destroyed its stock after the war.
