Morella's cooperativa issued these tiny paper vouchers during the Civil War as the Republican zone's commercial networks fractured and small change vanished entirely from circulation. Municipalities, cooperatives, and unions across Republican Spain filled that gap with locally printed scrip — literally thousands of distinct emissions — and Morella's series is among the more diminutive physically, which created real handling problems and accelerated wear.
Survival rates for these Aragonese cooperative emissions are low. Paper this thin, used daily for bread and staples, rarely lasted the war.
