Montmeló is a small municipality north of Barcelona, and like hundreds of Catalan towns during the Civil War, its ajuntament issued fractional paper currency after the Republic's silver coinage vanished from circulation almost immediately following the July 1936 uprising. The Generalitat's attempt to coordinate local issues through the Departament de Finances had limited reach, and municipal printing remained scattered and improvised well into 1937.
El Secretariat Català handled a significant volume of these guerra civil locals, which at least guaranteed a degree of consistent paper stock and press quality not always found in the more desperate small-town issues. Turró catalogues this as #1589 — deep into a numbering sequence that reflects just how extensive Catalonia's fragmented wartime currency production actually was.
